1. How to Choose the Right Tree Guard Height to Prevent Browsing?
During winter or periods of food scarcity, wild animals like rabbits primarily gnaw on the bark at the base of the trunk. The height they can reach is usually determined by the local snow depth. Therefore, tree guard height must follow the principle of "full coverage + anti-intrusion":
Standard Protection Height: It is recommended to set the tree guard height between 50 cm and 80 cm. This height fully covers the maximum browsing range of a standing rabbit, effectively protecting the tree base from girdling. For larger trees or areas with severe rabbit damage, the protection height should be no less than 1 meter.
Factor in Snow Depth: In northern regions with heavy snowfall, the tree guard height must be determined based on the historical maximum snow depth. Generally, the guard should extend 10 cm to 20 cm above the snow level to prevent rabbits from standing on the snow to reach the unprotected trunk.
Anti-Intrusion at the Base: The base of the tree guard must be in close contact with the ground. During installation, it is recommended to cover the root zone with a mound of soil and pack it tightly to prevent hares or rodents from burrowing underneath the guard.
2. Guide to Sizing Corrugated Plastic (PP) Tree Guards
Corrugated plastic (PP material) is lightweight, waterproof, and corrosion-resistant, making it an ideal replacement for traditional straw ropes and wire mesh. Sizing should focus on these core parameters:
Thickness Selection: A thickness of 2 mm to 3 mm is generally recommended for standard tree guards. This thickness provides a lightweight and flexible material that effectively resists mechanical impacts and animal gnawing without adding unnecessary weight to young trees.
Diameter and Growth Allowance: The diameter of the tree guard must be 2 cm to 3 cm larger than the sapling's diameter to allow for future growth. Once the trunk reaches a diameter of over 10 cm and the bark thickens, rabbits typically stop browsing. At this point, the guard can be easily removed and reused.
Material and Weather Resistance: Since tree guards are exposed outdoors long-term, it is recommended to choose UV-treated PP corrugated plastic. This material is chemically resistant, will not mold or rot when exposed to prolonged rain, sun, or moist soil, and can last for 3 to 5 years or even longer.
3. Pitfalls to Avoid During Snap-Fit Installation
Corrugated plastic tree guards usually feature interlocking or snap-fit designs for easy, bark-friendly installation. However, pay attention to these details during actual operation:
Never Use Wire Ties: When securing the tree guard, use adjustable straps or specialized plastic clips. Never use sharp materials like wire. As the tree grows, wire can easily embed into the bark, causing severe mechanical damage.
Check Snap Security: After installation, gently pull or shake the tree guard to ensure the snaps are fully embedded in the slots and securely locked. If the snaps are loose, press them back into place immediately to prevent the guard from being blown away by wind or pushed open by animals.
Mind the Removal Direction: As the tree thickens, never yank or forcefully pull the old guard off. Press the release buttons on the snaps and slide it off smoothly to protect both the bark and the snap structure, ensuring it can be reused on newly planted trees in the future.
